Phoenicians and Carthaginians used the place as a port of call
and during the Roman occupation it was known as Sala Colonia.
Then in the 10th century, Muslim warriors built a ribat (monastery)
from which derived the name Rabat.
In the 12th century, it became the capital of the Almohad conqueror
Moulay Yacoub, and was later on abandoned for Fez. In 1912, under
the French protectorate it became the capital of the Kingdom of
Morocco up to nowadays.
Mild climate all the year round, sometimes hot in summer, but
never cold in winter. It rains occasionally in winter.
